Senior night: An exciting and triumphal game for the Lady Patriots.

The Lady Patriots began the game with a lot of motivation coming from the encouraging crowd. They were able to score a 3-pointer in the first ten seconds of the game. Moments later, Senior Jenica Marilla scored with a layup which made the score 5-2. A Patriot foul gave Crean Lutheran two free throws, which tied the score at 5-5. Then Senior Kelly Atkinson got the rebound after Marilla made an attempt, which made the score 11-5, a great recovery. Kelly Atkinson was on a roll, scoring 2-pointers three more times which pumped the score to 17-5. With a substantial lead, the girls played a tough defense. Senior Alexis Medina assisted Senior Nicole Olaes in scoring the final two points of the first quarter, which made the score 23-5.

As quarter two began the Lady Patriots, kept the lead and their momentum going. Crean Lutheran began the second quarter with possession of the ball, but they struggled to score. Olaes scored a 2-pointer which increased the Oxford’s lead to 20 points. The girls quickly gained possession of the ball again but made various close attempts to score. Medina finally scored which made the score 28-5. Moments afterwards, Marilla stole the ball back from Crean Lutheran and scored, increasing the score to 30-5. The ball stayed on Oxford’s possession for most of the time of the second quarter. The first half ended 39-5, after Olaes scored the final two points in the last twenty seconds of the game.

Oxford’s Lady Patriots began the second half of the game with possession of the ball. Medina scored the first points of the second half, which made the score 41-7. The ladies still held a high lead. Crean Lutheran seemed to have started the second half with revived energy, since they seemed to play a stronger defense. The girls carefully passed the ball to each other various times, as they struggled to score. With pressure from the shot clock they forced each other to attempt scoring, never allowing Crean Lutheran to steal the ball. Olivia Yang finally scored a wonderful 3-pointer, which brought Oxford’s score to 44-9. The third quarter ended 44-11.

The Lady Patriots began the final quarter of the game with high hopes and energy. Yang scored once again which made the score 44-14. A turnover to Oxford allowed Medina to take a risky 3 pointer, which made the score even higher, 52-14. Then, Crean Lutheran impressively stole the ball and attempted to score. The Lady Patriots, however, were able to steal the ball back. The score was 52-18. The Lady Patriots demonstrated good teamwork by relying on each other to keep possession of the ball. Atkinson made an attempt to score, but an aggressive Crean Lutheran player gave her a free throw, which she successfully made. The games ended shortly after, the score being 53-18.

Although they may not have played the most skilled team, the girls kept the game interesting through their outstanding plays and offense. The crowd was attentive and felt the team’s great chemistry. It was a great victory for the girls.
