The Lady Patriots played intensely, as they were able to stop Sage Hill from scoring, playing a strong defense, while being able to actually score, and magnificently win the game, making the game compelling to the small audience.

Kelly Atkinson, Senior, started off the game with a good attack on the ball allowing the Lady Patriots to begin the game with possession of the ball. Senior Alexis Medina took possession of the ball and attempted to score. Moments later, Junior Vianca Morales assisted Atkinson who scored, 2-0. After some turnovers and steals from both teams, Senior Jenica Marilla scored with a layup, making the score 4-0. A foul on Oxford’s behalf gave Sage Hill a free throw, which allowed them to successfully score their first point. The referee claimed Oxford traveled, which gave Sage Hill possession of the ball, but the Lady Patriots were quickly able to steal the ball back. Then, Marilla scored a point on a free throw, which increased the score to 5-1. Moments later, Vianca Morales shot a two pointer, to bring the score 7-3. With excellent teamwork, Marilla assisted Morales in scoring the final 2 points of the first quarter with a two pointer. Throughout the first quarter the girls’ good teamwork was necessary for their lead in the game, 9-3.

At the start of the second quarter, the Lady Patriots once again began with the ball under their possession which worked for their advantage. Unfortunately, seconds into the game the referee called out a foul on Oxford’s behalf, which gave Sage Hill possession of the ball. Nevertheless the ladies did a good job at playing defense. Alexis Medina stole the ball, but it returned to Sage Hill’s possession allowing them to score, 9-5. Then Sage Hill was awarded a free throw where they were able to score one more point, 9-6. As the game progressed, Sage Hill began to play more aggressively, but the girls kept their hopes high. Marilla assisted Medina to bring up Oxford’s lead to 5, the score being 11-6. With some good attempts at three pointers, the score remained 11-6, as neither team scored. Junior Tracey Fisher scored a two pointer which made the score 13-8. Marilla assisted Morales in the final two points, 15-8. With thirty seconds left of the first half, Sage Hill scored two points. The first half of the game ended 15-10.

The third quarter started with some reenergized opponents, but the Lady Patriots made it through. Marilla assisted Senior Nicole Olaes in scoring a two pointer, 17-10. Then the girls demonstrated good teamwork to gain possession of the ball. Kelly Atkinson scored the next two-pointer, 19-10. A foul on Sage Hill’s behalf gave Oxford possession of the ball. The girls made some good attempts to score, but Sage Hill was able to steal and score a 3-pointer. The score was now 19-15, as Sage Hill was starting to catch up. Olaes assisted Atkinson in scoring, 21-15. The girls made various attempts to score, but could not bring up their score. The third quarter ended 21-19.

With new tension to maintain the lead, the Lady Patriots began the final quarter of the game. Seconds into the game, the Lady Patriots were awarded two free throws. Morales shot two successful free throws, which brought the score 23-19. Medina did a good job at keeping the ball within bounds. The girls seemed reenergized since they were ready to defeat Sage Hill. Olaes assisted Atkinson which increased the score to 25-21. A turnover went to Oxford, but Sage Hill grabbed the rebound and scored 25-23. Olaes then scored a 3-pointer, which brought the score 28-23. The referee then called out a foul for Sage HIill, which gave Atkinson a free throw, which made the score 29-25. Morales, who was assisted by Atkinson, scored the next 2-pointer, which made the score 31-25. As a result of the fouls, the final points were scored in free throws. Morales brought the score to 35-25, after the referee awarded Oxford with 3 free throws. Seconds later, Atkinson scored two free shots which brought the score 37-25. Morales once again scored on two different free throws. The game ended shortly after at 40-29.

The game last Tuesday against Sage Hill proved to be another successful victory for the Lady Patriots, and gave them new hopes since they will play challenging rivals St. Margaret’s next Friday.
