The girls JV game during Oxford’s homecoming proved to be a slight disappointment in the onrush of Oxford victories. Despite valiant efforts on the part of all of our girls the Oxford team still failed to bring a win home. However it did not upset the momentum of homecoming which was largely a success. Before the game the girls seemed to be strong players.A large percentage of practice shots seemed to make their mark and on a whole the girls seemed pumped and ready to play against our rival Whitney. Whitney on the other hand seemed to be sloppier than usual missing a large amount of free throws and lay-ups. It seemed to be what would be expected of an easy game however Whitney would not give up without a fight During the first quarter the teams seemed largely equal in power and prowess. Whitney gained a quick lead with a succession of lay-ups that put them up by eight points. Thanks to number thirteen Anna Ramones though Oxford kept a close trail behind, always staying within four points behind Whitney. However Oxford was plagued by somewhat lacking play, giving up several turnovers as well as inciting fouls, allowing for Whitney to score a few easy free throws. By the end of the quarter Oxford was trailing Whitney at 6-11. The second quarter seemed ripe to end much like the first. Both teams constantly fouled, hampering flow as well as scores. Whitney played fairly well with its defense able to shut down all but the strongest offensive attempts by Oxford. However thanks to Ramones and number thirty-five Michelle Ngo Oxford gained a handful of points to stay in the running. By the end of the first half though Oxford was just clinging onto a ten point deficit at 12-22. The third quarter was where things got ugly. Despite the coaches best efforts the team seemed worse for wear due to their position on the scoreboard. Melancholy and poor morale wracked our team and possibly brought down their game. Whatever it was Whitney that gained a huge advantage over our team. Oxford’s only break seemed to be in the number of fouls that Whitney caused, this allowed Feby Kim to get the few free throws to give Oxford a meager boost. Things looked grim though at the end of the quarter with Oxford down 18-32. The fourth quarter spelled the end on our team’s tragic loss. Whitney shot ahead with several plays done by their beast of a forward. Our girls simply could not stop her utter manliness as she tore through our team. However the fatal flaw of this man-beast was in her willingness to commit fouls which eventually landed her on the bench near the half way mark of the quarter. The outcome of the game seemed written on our girl’s faces as they struggled to keep the pressure on Whitney. Injuries were common with some players getting knocked to the floor for extended periods of time, of course with our crowd’s support. In the end though despite loads of energy from the crowd and our natural Oxford determination to win, we lost the game 21-47. It was a sorry loss no doubt, but it was a loss surrounded by wins. Overall Oxford swept Homecoming winning in all but this game, a definite success in anyone’s book. Our JV basketball team should be proud of what they’ve done and should not look on this as shame but only pride. |
