As the first match of the anticipated Whitney game started, it was hard to see who would come out on top. In the first few points, possession went from Oxford to Whitney and back. Defense from the Patriots started fiercely with a block against an attempted tip from Whitney giving Oxford the (2-0) lead to start the game. With the score being favorable on Oxford’s side (5-2), an ace made by Whitney gave them four consecutive points thereafter, with a line shot from their offense and miscommunication and reception errors from Oxford, catching them up and resulting in the (5-6) score. After a timeout (6-9) was called from Oxford, the match became more intense, with errors and miscommunication on both sides. A rally that lasted well over 30 seconds ended in an attack error made by Oxford of hitting the net, and gave Whitney the five point lead and score of (8-13) at this time in the game. Another timeout later (9-17), the Patriots start to make a comeback mostly by the errors by Whitney and offensive attacks on their own credit (13-22). Oxford made some errors, but by the end, Oxford gained possession of the ball to earn five more points (18-22). Whitney secured the first match with three consecutive points due to Oxford miscommunication, ending with the scored (18-25) and a 0-1 lead in the game. Whitney started off with a serve that went out off Oxford tips, and right away, Oxford tied up the match (1-1). Whitney rested on the offensive and communicative errors by Oxford to garner a (1-4) lead. Oxford called a time out and came back with strong, effective serves that went right through the opposition, tying the match (4-4). A lengthy rally ended with a point for Oxford (7-8) and continued with the following three points attributed from a successful attack block and ball handling errors like doubles and side outs by Whitney (10-8). A rally ended with another double by Whitney and the next Oxford point was a line shot (12-9), forcing the Whitney coach to call a time out. Whitney came back after the time out after a down ball from Oxford (14-11). This second match became a tug-of-war and with doubles and miscommunications from both teams, ended in a (25-15) score and a 1-1 tie from Oxford in the game. In the final match, Oxford started off with a great lead, displaying their defensive and offensive skills in service plays and attack blocking (5-0). Whitney redeemed themselves in a three point, consecutive comeback with a roll save and a spike (5-3). With service errors first from Whitney then from Oxford, each quickly gained two points each (7-5), with Oxford still in the lead. A time out from Whitney left a sense in the air that Oxford might win this one. Whitney, still with possession served a floater that went out on tips and Oxford volleyed the ball back to have a back row attack down ball fall short before the net, giving the Patriots that point (8-6). Whitney gained another four points in a row and took the lead (7-10). A time out from Oxford put everyone on the edge of their seats. The suspenseful back-and-forth competition for each point was (9-13) before the rally that was honestly intense. The crowd was on their feet cheering for their team to not only gain that point, but to gain bragging rights as the team who could endure and finish a such feat as a long rally. Eventually, Oxford gained that point from an unsuccessful down ball from Whitney (10-13). Whitney tipped the ball over from an attack block (10-14). Oxford spiked their returning hit (11-14). Lastly, Oxford lost a point to Whitney due to a reception error, leaving the score (11-15) and Whitney with the game, 1-2. |
