Cassy Coleman, Varsity Softball captain and shortstop, answers some questions

1. What position do you play?

The main position that I play is shortstop and I am also a backup pitcher.

2. What is your favorite aspect of softball?

What I love most about softball is how much of team sport it really it is. No team will get by with one or two star players, every player gets their shot in the spot light and it is what they do with that opportunity that brings a team closer together.

3. How long have you been playing softball?

I have been playing softball since I was about six years old, starting out on a tee- ball team, to ASA, to travel, and now my high school team.

4. How is this year of Varsity softball different than your past two years with the team?

This year is different than others because it is the first year we do not have any seniors on the team. And it is a challenge, but not in a bad way. We do not look at it as a disadvantage, but more of a way for us to prove that we can win whether our team has seniors or not. We have many experienced players, three captains who are working to up the play, two dedicated coaches that do their best to motivate us, and a great group of girls ready to play some softball. That’s what the game is about.

5. As a captain, what are your responsibilites?

My responsibility as a captain are to first of all, be a leader by example out there on the field. Becky, Cassie, and I do our best to be leaders out there and teach and show the girls the rules of the game. We all are learning from each other out their on the field, so when it comes down to it, I feel my number one thing I have to check myself for every once in a while is that I’m out there with a good attitude and playing to my fullest capability.

6. Has being a captain changed the way you play on the team?

As far as performance in games, I always try my best so having the title as captain definitely does not change anything in that aspect. However, one thing I am working a lot harder is to recognize the areas we all need improvement in and to put more emphasis on those things at practice. I try my best to find ways to motivate the girls and ultimately to bring us closer as a team.

7. After being 7 time Academy League Champions, do you think this year’s team will be able to carry on the tradition?

I have no doubts for this team. We are motivated to close this season with a 9-0 record and so far we are well on our way. We are practicing harder and working longer so this goal is achieved for us as a team and our school as a whole.

8. Last year the team consisted of mostly seniors and this year there are no seniors, do you think that has affected the team at all?

Honestly, I’m glad that we are having this chance to prove ourselves. For years softball has been mocked for their seniors being the ones who ‘carry the team’ and this year we are proving them wrong. We have five wins in league now and four games left and I am determined that our team will show what it takes to win this years league, with or without seniors.

9. How close are all the girls on the team?

We are a new team so at first I was a little worried with how fast we grow together as a team, but like I said, softball is the best sport for team work experience. So I would say we are growing closer and closer every practice, game, and even off the field when we have our hang outs.

10. What are some of the funniest memories that you have had so far?

Oh dear, far too many of those moments. One thing that unites our team, which may sound ridiculous but true, is our love for food. We seriously spend practice describing our different cravings for the day. So one day at practice Becky Roh brought a California burrito, but did not have enough time to eat so stuck it in her bag for after practice. So after practicing for two hours and the people who take the bus had left, we had about six girls left. So we decided to sit in a circle and work on situps, planks, etc. Then we remembered Becky’s burrito! So we took it out and passed it around the circle each taking a bite as we sat and did sit ups at the same time.

11. If you could say one thing to readers, what would you tell them?

COME TO OUR GAMES AND SUPPORT US. We are already off to a great start this season and well on our way to becoming league champs!
