Joshua Chang, Artist

What appealed to you the most about GameDay, that made you want to join?

GameDay is not just any club that you can join on the OA campus. In fact, it is not a club at all, it’s a business started by student entrepreneurs from OA and has been run by mostly the students themselves as we basically control and operate a business that supports and promotes the sports at OA. GameDay is not just a business or a club, but like a tightly woven separate family, one that can help you grow, but also aid in the growth of others as we all share a common purpose and love for sports.

So, what exactly do you do?

I am the Artist for GameDay, and what I am in charge of is the visual aid that comes along with the posters. I am mostly in charge of the GameDay t – shirt designs and designs that the Art Director asks me to do. In general all the designs I do follow the same process and since I am not as tech savvy as most of the people who utilize Photoshop I hand draw all of my designs before they go into the computer. After I scan it into the computer I basically clean it up and input the colors needed for the design.

What does it take to get where you are now?

People who want to become future artists in GameDay must have a good talent and passion for Art, Drawing, and Design. This is key for you as an artist, because you are the one creating the posters, t-shirt designs and all of the visual aids you see supporting sports and the “club” itself. This is just a particular quality the artist needs apart from the usual work ethics. Another very important quality is diligence and getting things in on time, because if you are an exceptional artist, but fail to do the assignment on time then your skills go to waste and is utterly useless. Therefore to become an Artist for GameDay you must be diligent, have talent in art, and have a passion for drawing/designing. Also you need to know how to use photoshop.

What are the best & worst parts about your job?

The best thing about being an Artist for GameDay is seeing your work really do the job it is supposed to do. For example when you see people walking down the halls and their eyes catch glimpse of a poster, and they are genuinely interested it makes you feel good, because deep inside you know that the design you made for that poster attracted their attention. Also another thing about being the artist is that you can see everyone enjoy the t-shirt design you made and basically wear YOUR artwork with pride, this has got to be the best part :D. The worst things about being an Artist is when they do not appreciate the work and effort put into creating that one design or artwork and they request something else to be done the next day when you put your heart and soul into something already and they just blow it off.

Any last words or commentary you have say about GameDay.

GameDay is not just a club you go to meetings for on Fridays, or a thing to do with your friends. It is something you need to invest your time in, and when you do it will all come and be worth it when your job gets published or shown to the rest of OA.

Do you believe you have to love sports to be in GD? Explain why or why not.

You don’t really have to LOVE sports to be in GD, but it helps. You don’t really have to love sports because you can still be the Artist for GD yet not really care much for sports, and still get the work done, but if you do it’s a great plus point because it helps you relate with the other members of GD and in the end you learn to become a closer group something that emulates a close family tie of friends.
