Connie Chung, Head of Design What appealed to you the most about GameDay, that made you want to join? Last year, I constantly heard about GameDay and its success in advertising and promoting people to go to sports games. On campus, I saw appealing posters, and I wanted to be in the art department. I learned art when I was little since I was always interested in it, but I never had the chance to actually design something with Photoshop for a club or company. Since my boyfriend last year was an art director for GameDay, I thought that I would give it a shot my junior year and I got in. So, what exactly do you do? As Head of Design, I basically create posters for the upcoming sports events, such as Senior Nights, Homecoming, and important games, to promote, advertise, and support the sports teams. The posters should be appealing to the eyes and make you want to go to the game to cheer for your teammates. For each poster that I made, I was able to create my own designs, but also include the specified information for the game I was promoting others to attend. You have a lot of freedom to choose what you want to include on the poster because YOU are the designer. What does it take to get where you are now? It takes dedication, responsibility, and creativity. When I am told that an important game is coming up, I try to brainstorm ideas, look for images, and come up with a good slogan before I even open up Photoshop. Then, I would sketch a rough draft of what the poster would mostly look like and then make it on Photoshop. It’s extremely important to get the work done a few days before the game because you want as many people to go as possible. However, with creativity, I am able to take new risks by trying and playing with new things on Photoshop to make each poster different from one another. What are the best & worst parts about your job? The best part of my job is having the freedom to make the poster in any way you want with the specific poster size you will be given. I think being Head of Design is like being a fashion designer for a sports magazine. Sometimes, it may be frustrating because Photoshop drives me crazy since things may not always turn out the way you want it to, but you will always have the opportunity to improvise. And honestly, there is no worst part of my job because it’s fun, and I'm able to be creative with my designs! Any last words or commentary you have to say about GameDay? You should join GameDay and help promote school spirit for sports! If you are interested in designing and making posters, joining the art department would be the perfect thing to do. In GameDay, it’s fun, and you meet, work, and interact with lots of new people. Do you believe you have to love sports to be in GD? Explain why or why not. No, I certainly believe that you do not have to love sports to be in GD. Honestly, I don’t play a sport at school, and I don’t “love” a certain sport. I do like watching people play sports, especially volleyball and tennis, but GD is not about your love for sports; it’s about promoting sports and encouraging others to support the teams and your school. |
