Four year varsity Girls Soccer player Lani Ancheta answers our questions about the team and Homecoming hopes.

1. Can you please explain the position you play and let us know how many years you have played for Oxford?

I play forward which basically means I try to score. This will be my fourth year on Varsity so it’s been fun playing with a variety of girls and coaches.

2. How do you personally feel about going into the Homecoming game this Friday? Your personal goals?

This game, along with senior night, will be the games I am most looking forward to. After four years of playing Whitney the build up of rivalry has fueled me for this game. I would love to score a hat trick and find a way to keep the girls motivated and pumped.

3. How does your team feel about going into the Homecoming game this Friday? Team goals?

The whole team is really excited for Homecoming. Even though we don’t play at home, but just because we’re playing Whitney. Our obvious goal is to win but a shut out would be icing on the cake.

4. Will the Homecoming game be any different than any other league game?

The only difference for this game is the energy. We are all pumped for this because we want to win so badly. I think a lot of the girls will try harder in the game because it means more to us than any other game this year so far.

5. As a senior, what do you want the team to accomplish before you graduate?

I would love to go to CIF again this year and make it past the first round. Also, our whole team really wants to beat Sage the next time we play them because the last game was unfortunate losing 0-1.

6. How has your experience playing for Oxford changed over the years?

It’s definitely had its ups and downs. It seems that every year we have lost a vital member of the team whether it be a coach or actual player. So it’s been a challenge adjusting to the new faces but all the while it was fun too.

7. How has the coaching change affected your team?

Since Coach Henry has been our 3rd coach in three years, it has affected how our team learns and plays the game. We had to adjust each year to each coach but luckily we have been able to adjust quickly and having some of the same girls on the team helps too.

8. What new styles of play or strategies has your team employed this year?

One of our coach’s mottos is “use your shoulder” which has helped us to be more physical and aggressive during games.

9. What is your favorite aspect of soccer?

Soccer has always been a release for me, so I love that it’s a physical and challenging game, not only physically but mentally too.

10. How close are the girls on the team and what is your bond like with the rest of them?

This year, I think the team has been the closest it has ever been since I’ve played for Oxford. Age doesn’t matter to us and we just love joking around with each other wherever we are.
