Third baseman Lucas Sardo lets GameDay into the world of Oxford Baseball and insiders on the team and its players.
So Lucas, how do you feel about all the talk going around the school after your CIF championship victory last year? I think it is really great that the team is getting a lot of attention for this. We worked really hard last year and we are all greatful for the support we got from all of the students.Alright so give me a basic outlook of how you think the team will fare this year? The team should fair pretty well this year. We all know that Sage Hill is going to be filled with all of their seniors, but we will take them down like we did last year. How about the loss of the two seniors, one being the leader of the team Cameron, how much of an affect do you think that will have on the team? The loss of our two seniors was pretty dramatic. Both of them, Ryan Plunkett and Cameron Bedard, were big leaders on the team. But the team still will function really well under the support and intensity of Patrick Zajac our lone Senior. Plus we have a team that has a lot of good chemistry, and the team has really welcomed the Freshmen with open arms.Speaking of the lone senior is Pat the new captain or did Coach Dana appoint someone else? At the banquet last year he told us that the two captains would be Pat, and Hayden, but everybody helps out and steps up as a leader on the field. The team has been practicing since the start of the year right? In what ways do you think practicing year round helps the team? We all like being a team year round for the most part. Sometimes it's a hassle with all of our Juniors finally getting into drivers training, so people miss practice. But overall I think it's really good to stick around as a team year round because we really get to know each other well, and bond as a team.So tell the readers a little bit about yourself Lucas and the way you approach the game of baseball. For me the way I really like to approach the game is to be strong offensively. As a team if you hit the ball hard everywhere, and do your job as a team player in situational hitting, we will always win the game. Plus I like being the game changer at the plate, I love it when pitchers and coaches fear me.Tell me about the chemistry that the team has? I mean I always see you guys hanging around together. I say this a lot around the team, and I know they are tired of hearing me say it, but we are a family. Everyday we talk, we go to practice, play games, and even go to some other oxford home games. And a lot of people might think that we are a little bit obnoxious, but that's honestly how we have fun as a team. We are a happy family together. The cheers that the team does at volleyball games are hilarious, who comes up with all of them? Well the story goes that we just decided to watch a volleyball game after practice, and when we went in to the VARSITY VOLLEYBALL GAME nobody was there. We were so sad that nobody really wanted to watch our varsity team play. So we started to like chant oxford, sing the fight song, and then I believe it was Pat or one of the Higgers who came up with the crowd favorite, Sonic Boom. Then we just made more because we thought it was funny. Are you guys planning to attend other sporting events, such as basketball or soccer games? Of course we are going to attend these other games, as of now we are planning things to do that are special for homecoming. So stay tuned oxford, and make sure you come out and support these other teams.Lastly, give me one thing you are really looking forward to this season. The thing that I am really looking forward to this season, is how we can come back after our amazing season last year and put it all together again. If we are able to work as a team on the field everything will be fine. But we have to take our season one game at a time, we can't automatically jump to conclusions. Because I mean it's a long season, and anything is possible. |
