OA’s swim team begins the new season loaded with energy and enthusiasm.

With no sun, possibilities of wind and rain, and cold weather, the team must be in the pool by 5:45 am and are out by 7:30 with just enough time to make it to school on time. This is no easy task but the team has proven to be dedicated and consistent. The returning swimmers have adapted to the new practice times and the newcomers have shown a good effort to perform their best and improve. Their efforts have allowed them to bring a grand victory on their last two meets against Santiago and Bolsa Grande. The team’s specialty seems to be in relays, which make up a great deal of events at swim meets. The team’s outstanding relay team consisting of Sophomore Kevin Privett, Freshman Jared Leeong, Junior Jonathan Okada, and Senior Tae Min Son has been a victorious combination of swimmers.

Although legendary swimmers Allison Rolenaitis and Stanley Zhou have graduated, the team’s upperclassmen and experienced underclassmen have stepped up to fill their shoes. The team primarily consisting of sophomores, many who are just beginners, is headed toward successful years, as they will improve with time. With the great amount of new swimmers they hope this season to be more successful than last year.

In swim as in many sports, the team that wins is the one that gains the most number of points. Teams gain a certain amount of points depending on how well each individual performs in specific events, similar to the track and field point system. This furthermore makes swim more of an individual sport, which emphasizes good attitude and effort coming from each individual.

Sophomore Timothy Perdew comments, “I truly love swim and am really excited for the rest of the year that’s coming up for us.” The teams’ all around positive attitude serves as another strong point.

The team’s major goals for this season are to have fun and try their hardest. Sophomore Jessica Luu, an experienced swimmer, states that her team goals are “to go all out during competitions while having a lot of fun.” This makes swim more of a fun break from the rigorously academic world of Oxford.

With an optimistic mindset and dedication the team will continue this season. The team’s good chemistry and dedication will hopefully prove to be sufficient for them to succeed in upcoming meets. Oxford looks forward to the improving swim team for future years to come.
